In the past couple of years Canada has noticed an on going problem beginning to develop throughout our economy. It is an issue so problematic, that if left unaddressed will see Canada left behind in the ongoing global economic race. It is the declining value of our human capital. Human capital by definition is described as; the abilities and skills of any individual, especially those acquired through investment in education and training, that enhance potential income earning (Collins, 2009). For Canada’s economy to rise, and to maintain economic relevancy on the world stage our nations human capital must improve. For this to happen Canada must make investments into several area’s that will be a driving forces in ensuring improvements in this area. We must first invest in our education systems, specifically education on post secondary and graduate levels. These investments will then play a significant role in attracting more top level international students. These international students will bring with them not only significant skill sets and intelligence, but also help establish solid international connections and partnerships that will help fuel Canada’s economy. Human Capital is a crucial element to any successful economy, and investments towards these afore mentioned areas will light the fire that will power Canada’s economy in the new global economy.

Several glaring factors can shoulder the blame for the decline of human capital within Canada, none more so then the education systems in our nation, specifically education systems at post secondary and graduate level. Canada is the only developed country We are the only country that does not have national strategy for post secondary education. No established goals, no benchmarks, and no public reporting of results based on established measures (Eggelton, 2012).
