Reading Responses

You will write two of these responses this semester. Each one should be 3-5 pages long (double-spaced, 12-point font). These responses provide you an opportunity to reflect upon that day’s readings and to make connections between them and the other material we previously read or discussed in class.

The response is due at the beginning of class (either electronically via email or hard copy in class).

The requirements for each assignment are listed below.

1. Given that the reading assignments are fairly long, I don’t expect you to discuss the entire article; rather, you should choose once concept or section to discuss. This is the heart of the assignment – narrowing your focus appropriately so that you remember the context of the material and yet respond to the concept/topic at hand. Remember, these are short papers, and you are not expected to respond to every issue or aspect of a particular topic.

2. Your paper should begin with a brief summary of what you read (just the issue or specific topic you have chosen).

3. Next, respond to that concept/topic by giving your point of view. What do you think? Is the author correct or partially correct? Did the author miss the boat entirely?

4. Support your opinion – why is the author correct or not? This support might include information from other readings, lecture material, or class discussions. This section is the focus of the paper and should be carefully written.

5. Edit your paper carefully for APA style, grammatical errors, wordiness, and sentence structure. Succinct and careful writing will allow for deep, reflective thinking.
