Summary

As for the summary, it was concluded that there were three major sources that lead toward this never-ending conflict between Ethiopian-Eritrea which are the border demarcation problem, Ethiopia landlocked problem, and last but not least is the rivalry issue in both of the country. Firstly, the border demarcation issue that was claimed as the main trigger for the conflict is described as the ill-defined border between the two countries. The boundary between the two country actually stretches about one thousand kilometers and is ill-defined because of the colonial boundary was poorly marked during World War II. However, this border issue labeled as unreasonable to start a war by United Nation because the exactly point where the ill-defined is stretches only a few kilometers from one sides to the other side. Furthermore, the area is a desolated area and has no significant economic prospect to either side. After the terrible war end on December 2000, this two countries has steered by the international community to agree to binding arbitration by international body and as the result, in 2003, Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC) held that Badme province is ruled in favor of Eritrea.

The second source of conflict is the landlocked problem faced by Ethiopia that dragged the conflict to almost never ended conflict. Even before the conflict started, Ethiopian government has suffered a slow economic growth because of the absence of port to import and export within the country. The economic problem worsts more when Eritrea finally introduced their own currency with different rates with Ethiopian currency. When Eritrea takes the first action toward the conflict by attacking the Ethiopian border, Ethiopia sees this action as opportunity to get several strategic provinces in the border for establishing a new port.
