The Soccer Mom: Nervous System Part One: At the Soccer Game What problems does Phyllis seem to be experiencing? Previously she has had a lack of concentration at work and forgot to pick up the kids one day last week. More recently she has had fainting spells, and says she feels more unfocused and disorientated. Which of these problems could be caused by dehydration? Dehydration can not only cause the untenability to focus along with the feeling of disorientation, but the fainting spells as well. Which of these problems might make you consider that there’s something more going on? Why? Fainting would be the biggest problem that would make me think that something more serious was going on. Fainting results from multiple serious changes in the body ranging from pregnancy, to diabetes, to anemia, to heart conditions and more. All these conditions are a serious matter, and her husband was wise in telling Phyllis to see a doctor. Suppose Phyllis does have a more serious problem. Can you think of any neurological problems that could be the cause of these symptoms? Multiple Sclerosis, Syncope, Epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. Part Two: The Doctor Visit What new signs or symptoms have been revealed? Her fingers going numb sometimes and possibly depression are new symptoms that have been reveled to us. Could any of Phyllis’s symptoms be attributed to depression? If so, which? Sure could, her symptoms of being fatigued and being unable to concentrate can be attributed to depression. What neurotransmitters are thought to be involved in depression? Monoamines are the neurotransmitters that are thought to be involved in depression, these include serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. What neurological disorders could have put her grandfather in a wheelchair? Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy are all debilitating diseases that could have put her grandfather in a wheelchair.
