Chapter 19 – Equal Opportunity in Employment

1. Describe the scope of coverage of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

a. This federal statute outlawed discrimination in many facets of society, including education, housing, transportation, and work

b. This act applies to employers with 15 or more employees, all employment agencies, labor unions with 15 or more members, state and local governments and their agencies, and most federal government employment

c. Native American tribes and tax-exempt private clubs are expressly excluded from coverage

d. Other portions of this act prohibit discrimination in housing, education, and other facets of life

e. Prohibits discrimination in hiring, decisions regarding promotion or demotion, payment of compensation and fringe benefits, availability of job training and apprenticeship opportunities, referral systems for employment, decisions regarding dismissal, work rules, and any other “term, condition, or privilege” of employment

2. Identify race, color, and national origin discrimination that violates Title VII

a. Race discrimination is based on categories such as African Americans, Asian, Caucasian, and Native American

b. Color discrimination is based on the color of a person’s skin

c. National origin or heritage discrimination is based on the country of a person’s ancestors, a person’s cultural characteristics, or a person’s heritage

i. Example: discriminating against someone getting a job based on their Irish accent, or a person who comes from the Middle East

3. Identify sex discrimination, including sexual harassment that violates Title VII

a. The act prohibits discrimination based on gender, pregnancy, and sexual orientation

b. Sex discrimination is going against a person solely because of his or her gender
