Human immunodeficiency virus also known as HIV is a virus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, AIDS. The HIV virus weakens the human immune system by destroying CD4 cells that fight diseases and infections. With a low count of CD4 cells the body’s immune system becomes weak making the person more susceptible to illnesses and infection.  Over time as HIV worsens it may progress in to AIDS. “People with HIV are said to have AIDS when they develop certain infections or cancers or when their CD4 count is less than 200. CD4 count is determined by a blood test in a doctor’s office” (WebMD 2005). I chose to write about HIV because it’s a serious worldwide epidemic that not too many people caution themselves about until it’s too late.  “According to the CDC, 1,051,875 people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with AIDS since the disease was first diagnosed in 1981. They also estimate that 583,298 have died from the disease in the U.S.” (Web MD, 2005). HIV can be transmitted through breast milk, vagina fluids, semen, and blood. The only way to tell if someone is infected with HIV is with a blood test. Although there is no treatment for HIV or AIDS there are antiretroviral drugs available to help control the replication of the virus and delay the onset of AIDS.

There are many factors patients should be aware of when diagnosed with HIV.  People who are HIV positive are at great risk of opportunistic infections. Diet is important to maintain the bodies health in order to fight off infection. People with HIV have a harder time doing so and thus use more calories. Eating a balanced diet with protein and vitamins are important in order to stay healthy. Plenty of water is also a must. Extra water can help the immune system, feel less tired, avoid dehydration, and even benefit medications taken.
