Introduction

Gallo Wine was established in 1933 by Ernest and Julio Gallo. From their modest beginnings in a small rented warehouse to becoming one of the largest wine distributor in the world today, Gallo has met every challenge head-on and learned what it takes to be a world class competitor in today’s complex global economy. Gallo’s products can be found in more than 90 countries world-wide and they are currently the world’s largest exporter and own the world’s largest brand of wine with their Barefoot line of bottled wine. Gallo is proud to acknowledge that it is their attention to quality and customer satisfaction that has contributed to the success that they have enjoyed in their rise to the top. Gallo employs a TQM system that involves every employee from upper management down to their line operators, and everyone in between from every department. A program that is based on Continuous improvement principles and lean methodology.

Summary of Operations

Gallo winery employs over 5000 employees and relies on the combined efforts of a massive supply chain collaborative to operate their business world-wide. It begins with the selection and cultivation of the grapes. Gallo grows about half of the grapes that they use for their wine and has opted to purchase the rest from local growers. Gallo works closely with their suppliers in order to guarantee that only the best grapes are used in the production of their wine. The grapes are taken to Gallo’s wine facilities where they are crushed to begin the wine making process.
