Today we will be doing a webquest to help in our investigation of the cell cycle. This should be a nice

change of pace as there are articles and videos you will need to find in order to complete the lesson. You

should also reference your notes on the cell cycle and the Surface Area to Volume Ratio lab.

Objectives:

1. Analyze factors that limit how large a cell can grow.

2. Name the main phases of the cell cycle.

3. Describe the main events occurring when the cell is in interphase.

4. List and describe the four steps of mitosis.

5. Compare how cytokinesis is different in plant and animal cells.

6. Describe what cell cycle regulators are.

7. Summarize the entire cell cycle and then describe what happens when the cycle goes “awry”.

What limits cell growth?

1. Name 3 things that happen as a result of the cell getting larger in size.

The cell devides

Die

Stop growing

2. What is the formula for finding the area of a cube?

A=6a2

3. Why do you have to multiply the area by 6?

Six sides duhhhhhh

4. How do you calculate the volume of a cube?

V=a3

5. What do we know about larger animals and their ability to warm up or cool down?

Heat is gained and lost more slowly. The animal doesn’t have to replace lost heat as quickly.

1/2

6. Describe the exchange of nutrients from the environment into a small cell.

The diffusion happens faster

7. Why do small animals such as mice and hummingbirds need to eat a lot of food in proportion to their

body size?

To keep their body temp.

8. Exothermic means “ectothermic”. Name some animals that are ectotherms and describe how they deal

with being small in terms of keeping warm.

9. Many large animals have developed unique ways to get rid of excess heat. How do elephants get

rid of excess heat?

Flap ears

10. Name several (at least 4!) body structures that must change in order to support a...
