What it means To Be a Leader
Being a leader is not as easy as it seems. You cannot be demanding nor place your comrades in an unfamiliar setting. You have to be able to listen and understand. By understanding, I mean you have to know what they have gone through. To be a leader you must lead by example and with reassurance. It is easier to lead when you know the struggles or problems your comrades have faced. I personally feel comforted when a leader listens and understand me. To be a leader you have to keep your word. Keeping your word builds trust in your comrade and they can rely on you. However, do not give your comrades complete reliability because eventually you want them to be able to stand on their own feet.
Currently I am in MCJROTC and frequently we go over leadership principles. I have noticed that I do not feel that I’m being led by my superiors. Reason being is because my leaders do not know how to guide us and when to let us learn on our own. All in all, leaders sometime take advantage of their authority and forget that “in order to be a good leader you must be a good follower.” A leader should have no pride amongst them so they feel as if they do not have to sweep down to a lower social standard. A leader should not even view it as so. A leader must do what he/she must do so their comrades may achieve their goal. That what I believe a leader is.
