BIOS252 Week 6 Lab 6 - ANS Exercise

Organization of the ANS

To complete this worksheet, select:

        Module:  Regulation

        Activity:  Anatomy Overviews

Title:  Nervous System: Organization of the ANS

.

1. Define the ANS and explain its general functions. The autonomic

nervous system is the visceral sensory and visceral motor neurons. The

autonomic nervous system is composed of motor neurons, both sympathetic and parasympathetic, conduct nerve impulses from the central nervous system to smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands. The ANS gets it’s name from the part of the nervous system that is thought to be spontaneous.

2. Click the Visceral Receptor to investigate further.

a. Describe visceral receptor function and their conscious level of perception. The visceral receptors monitor both smooth and cardiac muscle. The operate unconsciously while they are monitoring the visceral organs.

b. Identify chemoreceptor location and function.

Chemoreceptor are what detects chemicals in both taste and smell. They are located in the external surfaces of the body.

c. Identify temperature receptor location and function. Located near the external surfaces of the body, the temperature receptor helps detect temperature changes to keep the body regulated.

d. Identify mechanoreceptor location and function. Mechanoreceptors detect mechanical stimuli. They are located near the external surfaces of the body, and are what detects touch and sight.

3. Return to the main Autonomic Nervous System homepage to investigate the control centers.

a. Identify the main ANS control centers. The main control center comes from the hypothalamus. Also, the brain stem and spinal cord.

1. b. Identify the following.

4. Return, once again, to the main Autonomic Nervous System homepage. This time, explore Motor Pathways.

a. Describe ANS motor pathways. Motor pathways carry signals from the brain to the skeletal and...
