An information system can be described as a set of elements that gathers information, then processes and stores the information collected then distributes it to an organization to help support decision making and control.
Information systems work using three key components: input, processing and output. Input collects the raw data, processing converts the raw data to an understandable version and output distributes the processed data to people or activities that will use the collected data.
The organizational components, the people and the technological components are the infrastructure or foundation of what makes up an information system.
People are ones that build and maintain an information system. They know how to use the system for the business purpose. Without people, an information system is useless.
The organizational components of an information system consist of managerial, professional, technical and operational employees. The information system is a vital and important part of an organization. Information systems are built by an organization to serve the different levels of the organizational components.
The technological components of an information system are the computer hardware and software which is the physical equipment that is used for inputting, processing, and outputting data. Data management technology is the software that organizes the data on physical storage media. Networking and telecommunications technology consists of hardware and software devices that transfer data from one physical location to another. The World Wide Web is a service provided by the internet that stores, retrieves, formats and displays information on a web page.
