Out of Nowhere

Sometimes things happen unexpectedly. There are moments in life that take you by surprise and you have no way of controlling them. This was one of those moments and it changed the way I look at life altogether.

I woke up, rolled over and grabbed my phone to check the time. It was 7:20; ten minutes before my alarm was set to wake me up, and I was wide awake. This was strange since I had tossed and turned in bed all night due to being nervous. I had my first job interview scheduled for nine o’clock that morning, but something just didn’t feel right. I kept reassuring myself that it was perfectly fine to be anxious, and that I was ready for anything that happened at the interview. What I didn’t know was that the interview wasn’t what was going to change my life that day.

I got in my beaten up Ford Explorer and started driving. I was just a few miles away from where my interview was and traffic was flowing just fine. It seemed like every traffic light turned green right before I got to it. I started to feel like things were going to go my way and then everything changed. I was going about fifty mph down a four-lane highway with very few cars around me. All of a sudden I saw a blur in my peripheral vision, and then time slowed down. There was a bone-rattling crush and the sound of glass shattering. I was jarred back and forth. Before I could grasp what was going on I felt myself being lifted out of my seat. I remember being held down by my seatbelt as I watched everything around me start to flip. I glanced out of my window and for a split second I saw the asphalt getting closer. I closed my eyes and gripped the steering wheel even harder. I was shaken around like a rag doll as my top heavy Explorer flipped down the highway. In that moment, it seemed like it was never going to end. I blacked out.
