Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility is vital in becoming a successful individual, whether it be in your education, career or your personal life. (Philpott, 2009)
How do you define personal responsibility? Would you define it as a person who is responsible? Responsible how? Do you consider yourself to be a responsible person?
Personal responsibility is vital in all aspects of life, such as individually, at work, and school. The responsible person is someone who takes 100% responsibility for their life, both present and future. It’s someone who is willing to accept full accountability for their actions, recognizing and accepting the outcome of their actions, and understands those actions can influence or have an effect on themselves and those around them. The effect can be either a positive or negative effect. (Hatab, 2011)
In order to adequately achieve personal responsibility, a choice must be made. That choice is to take responsibility for your actions, even if it means having to face negative repercussions. The responsible person will choose to take responsibility, no matter the outcome. The responsible person does not always make the right choices. However, good choice or bad choice, they accept the outcome, learn from the outcome, and move forward with motivation and determination to succeed. If you want to be successful, you must accept 100% responsibility, plain and simple. (Philpott, 2009)
For some individuals, we tend to play the "blame game" when we are being faced with negative experiences. Some of us tend to blame others for things in our lives we are not happy with. We blame our family, managers, co-workers, friends, partner, money, etc. Instead of looking at where the real issue lies, which is within ourselves, we blame something or someone.
