Operations Manager – Career Research Paper

While researching for this paper, I found a wide variety of career paths within the logistics field. Categories included, but not limited to; transportation, distribution, skilled labor, management, warehouse, general labor, and even engineering. Along with these different categories, different work experience, education requirements, and pay expectations were common. Some jobs were entry level, some required master’s degrees, and the pay scale of some was very surprising (CareerBuilder: Home, 2014)! When trying to decide which avenue to research, it just made sense to go along a path that would most easily fit in with my previous work experience. Therefore, I have chosen a general Operations Manager position to research.

The logistics field is so vast with areas of expertise and an Operations Manager seems to have a need to be a “Jack of all Trades.” From simple, everyday tasks such as data entry, accounts payable, managing the organizations Human Resources to producing the correct amount of goods or services, while maintaining high quality standards, there is such a variety in the expectations of an Operations Manager. The Operations Manager position highlights many aspects of business. An Operations Manager can expect spending a majority of their time on leading a management team to improve the overall operations of a company. If a company is struggling in certain areas, for example, product supply, the Operations Manager will oversee the correct people to correct the situation. They will also have a hand in finance management. They will analyze different aspects of the business and increase or decrease spending accordingly. They will work closely with a finance team in larger corporations to a tight knit management team in smaller operations....
