Global Business Cultural Analysis: Key Word Selection
Liberty University
Key Term and Reasons
The key term that I researched was Ethnocentrism. I am interested to learn how Ethnocentrism differs from the other two paradigms (Polycentrism and Geocentrism) and what role it plays within a business setting. Defining what Ethnocentrism is and how it has evolved, what influences people to develop ethnocentric tendencies and how does it react to other paradigms? What are the negative and positive effects of Ethnocentrism? I want to answer these questions to achieve a stronger understanding and develop a concise ideology from this assignment.
Explanation of the Key Term
The ethnocentric paradigm plays an influential part in business and develops societies view on cultural habits of other nations. Our text defines Ethnocentrism as the belief that one’s own culture is superior to all others and the standard by which all other cultures should be measured. (Satterlee 2014)
Major Article Summary
Based on the results from Tomkiewcz & Gribbles research, as Americans we need to develop the ability to work effectively with other companies from different cultures. (Tomkiewcz & Gribble 2011)
Discussion
My understanding of ethnocentrism from a business stand point is companies need to make it a habit to develop a business plan that can be universally acceptable in regards to conducting business with other nations. Having that will develop stronger bonds and relationships with countries thus creating greater outcomes for all. However, while it is encouraged to develop methods that will inevitably result in success, one should not force upon views or societal rules that impede on another’s religion or cultural practices.
