Nikki Giovanni was an amazing educator, American Poet, activist and also a writer. This amazing woman was born in Knoxville, Tennessee; however she was raised in Lincoln Heights, which is a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended Fisk University an shortly after she attended University of Pennsylvania where she received a B.A in History. Shortly afterwards, Nikki Giovanni began teaching at Livingston College of Rutgers University but was writing beautiful poems at the same time. Her focus on how much power an individual has to make a difference on others life, strongly influenced a lot of individuals in this world. Nikki Giovanni’s poetry expresses her experience as a daughter and a mother, civil rights activist, her love for her family, and extremely strong pride towards racism. Nikki Giovanni’s poems surround so many different themes, like women, African Americans and love for example. “You Came too”, “Winter Poem”,” A Summer Love Poem”,” Love Is”, “A Poem Of Friendship” and,” Love Is a Human Condition” are all famous Love poems by Nikki Giovanni that will be discussed throughout this essay.

All of Nikki Giovanni’s Love poems express the deep meaning of love in various different ways. “Love Is” by Nikki Giovanni is a real thought out poem that was published in 1997 in her Love Poems book. These poems were influenced from the death of her sister and mother. Love Is expresses love strictly from her point of view; however, others can strongly relate to what Giovanni feels. “Some people don't remember that love is listening and laughing and asking questions no matter what your age” stated Giovanni in Stanza two. Giovanni feels as if some people really have forgotten the true meaning of love. Purchasing material things and just telling someone you love them is nowhere near the true meaning of love. Love is developed once quality time is spent with one another and personalities make a special connection....
