For the question “should first year writing be required of all incoming students?” We must first discuss the purpose of first year writing in general. On the Yeshiva University website the course description of first-year writing explains that the course will “introduce you to the vibrant intellectual community you'll be a part of at Yeshiva College and support you as you find your own way in the classroom, throughout campus and around New York City. Students in these courses will develop their ability to think critically; communicate effectively; and find, synthesize and share important information. Each class will utilize the process of inquiry to challenge, interpret and contextualize different points of view.” From what was stated, First year writing seems to be an integral part of a students life on and off the campus, as well as to help the students develop skills they need to implement in their future careers. Through the aforementioned importance of First Year Writing, this course should definitely be a requirement of all incoming students regardless of major.

There is much value to be said in first year writing. Having the ability to write well is essential in every aspect of life. Writing is necessary in most jobs especially ones that of a college graduate would get. Whether it is writing a speech for a conference or writing an outlook on a specific company, you really need to know how to write for every profession. In high school and some times even in college, many students do not realize the importance of writing and therefore do not take the class as seriously as they should. This lack of understanding results in poor writing skills later on in life and it is definitely evident. Since many students do not understand the importance of first year writing, the student will not even think about placing first year writing on their schedule and then only after college will they realize how important first year writing is and that they made a mistake....
