My place of employment is very unique in the sense that its primary function is not to make money, but rather maintain the status quo. I am the caretaker/carpenter on a 1,000 acre estate for a very wealthy and very private family just outside of Chicago. This is not their primary residence but rather their Shangri-La. The estate is a place that they come to when it is time for a break from their busy and demanding lives.

The estate consists of 11 out-buildings; 3 horse stables, 3 barns, 4 equipment garages, and 1 large event center along with 9 vacant houses on the property and all of these buildings are maintained year round. There is a tennis court, riding trails, private pond, multiple Zen gardens, a Stupa, and a very secluded tranquil sanctuary complete with a small water fall and running creek.

Because of their wealth and status the family is unwilling to sell any of the equipment that gets retired because of the fear of lawsuits. As a result we have more pieces of retired equipment then we have operational equipment and our storage capacity is already beyond its limits. It is from the families fear that there is the potential for lawsuits in the sale of any equipment comes the project opportunity. We could create a business that sells the equipment or create a 501.C.3 company and donate the equipment to that charity. In any event the company is then able to sell the equipment without risk to the family.

A vast majority of the retired equipment are either farm implements or construction equipment and every year there are local auctions that are specifically geared towards this arena. If the piece of equipment does not sell then it gets scrapped. This project would help eliminate equipment from the estate there by reducing the storage expenses and maintenance costs incurred by the property owners.
