WEEK 8 – 11/13/14: REFLECTION Dilena Diaz

The article “We Don’t Need Another Hero” provided some interesting perspectives. I felt that

after reading this article I had a misconception on what an effective leader might look like. I thought

leaders should share their victories and be open about what they have accomplished so others can see

their value and contribution. But after reading this article that view changed completely. The article

focuses on that the most effective moral leadership is provided by people who work behind the scenes

for quite victories.

Leaders should pick their battles and fight them carefully rather than go down in a blaze of

glory. I felt that leaders should make it known what they have accomplished or solved. It helps show

others their value and job security. But it seems from reading this article that might not be necessarily

the right approach. The article shares some interesting tools to help with being a quiet leader. One is

when faced with a scenario that you need to make a decision what the best approach should be. Time is

a key takeaway. Taking the time to evaluate the decision before rushing into a harsh and not fully

thought response is the best approach. I feel this is the opposite of what I would expect from a leader.

At times I personally feel when pressed with an issue I should try to make a decision or resolve the issue

as soon as possible. Simply, to prevent the issue from expanding or causing other issues in result. But

this might not be the right approach. Taking a step back and really thinking about all the opportunities

and possible decisions is a far better way. It’s being able to know which decisions should be made

quickly and which ones can be delayed so you can think things through.

Another interesting suggestion is that bending the rules is okay. You don’t need to follow the

rules strictly they can be bent within a boundary. An effective leader knows how to bend the rules and

not necessarily...
