Reflection Paper #1

The first poetry reading I attended was definitely very interesting to hear from different peers other than in class their different tones they expressed in there poems. I enjoyed that a lot of the poems were very personal and were about family members or in regards to family members. Kathleen’s first poem she opened up with the “found” poem really started the poetry reading off right with the poem she read. After hearing the metaphors she used in the poem it created a different theme than expected.

On the other hand, another great speaker during the poetry reading was Tony Bridgewater. Tony’s poem that was read was a translation poem that had a very interesting tone/ theme. The lines used such as “Nailed there Naked Bodies” and “Into Title Frenzies” were powerful contributors to the tone. Furthermore when Tony says “Green Sea Water Spilling through his blind home” really puts the image of his house getting destroyed in such a horrible way that at first can create more of a depressing horrific theme. Although, there is a line that really puts the icing on the cake of the dramatic theme Tony’s reading. The line stated “Carcass drunk on water”. When I heard Tony read that line it really created imagery of a man whose house is destroyed and the idea that the Carcass is just floating away with everything else in the house that was destroyed with the flooding.

The next poem that was read again by Kathleen was about here mothers death. This poem from the start established a beautiful tone that flowed very smoothly. When Kathleen states “Dark, Cool, Chapel” she creates imagery of a place that is very calm and sad, but makes you feel as if your there in the setting. Other in her poem lines such as “No might have been No place to go” put the idea in my mind that it was her mother’s time.

In relation to Kathleen’s work another one of her poems that was shared “Breaking and Entering II” is one of my favorites...
