Formulating Questions
Having sufficient time to plan and organize lessons is a big challenge for most teachers. When we try to maximize lesson effiency it is essential to look at the needs of your students. Our campus demographics are identified as more than fifty percent identified as an ELL (English Language Learner) student. As mentioned before one of the goals of Del Castillo Elementary is to improve the scores of out standardized testing regarding 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, focusing on improvement of the ELL population. Not reaching these goals of the standards set by the Texas Education Agency made this campus not reach its AYP goals for five years in a row. It takes teamwork from all stakeholders to input information to meet these needs. Noted by Braender and Naples (2013) “Effective teams are characterized by mature communication, clear roles, and productive conflict resolution” (p. 281). We face a diverse student population, therefore making it difficult for the school to reach and maintain AYP on state assessments. Failing to meet AYP one too many times causes schools to lose rating and change status with the state and become identified as a needing improvement campus.
The following chart will depict a school improvement plan that shows how Del Castillo Elementary can potentially improve the issue of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students not meeting the standards for the STAAR test. The low scores starts with the students reading at a very low fluency rate thus it affects their comprehension, producing failing reading scores which is tested in all three grade levels. Math, Writing, and Science are the other subjects tested which also require good reading skills in order to comprehend what is being asked.
