Caroline Scott Professor Gadson ENG 200H December 9, 2013 HPV Vaccine: Worth A Shot When Gardasil was approved by the FDA in 2006, countless people swooned over the three-dose process vaccination. Throughout the last few years however, controversy has arisen over the motives and consequences of this precautionary inoculation, causing many to withdraw from receiving these shots. Without a large number of Gardasil being administered, thousands of people face the risk of being diagnosed with the dozens of sicknesses that derive from the human papillomavirus, and potentially passing these illnesses on to innocent bystanders. This would lead to a generation of sickly Americans, resulting in high medical bills and potentially worsening the already dwelling economy.While many people are debating on whether or not their young children should be protected from a sexually transmitted disease, parents wonder if their children are more likely to become promiscuous prior to the vaccination, and if the cost is worth the trouble. However, others feel that the protection from other types of sicknesses that derive from this vaccination is worth the miniscule, indefinite side effects. In order to cease these speculations, we must persuade parents to have their juvenile offspring distributed the Gardasil vaccination. The Gardasil vaccination protects against the four main types of HPV, also known as human papillomavirus. Two of these four types of the virus are responsible for roughly 75% of cervical cancer cases in women, and approximately 90% of genital warts cases found in both

young boys and girls. The mitigation of the diagnosis of cervical cancer in women is extremely significant to the field of vaccinations because near 40% of women who receive this diagnosis die. (Levine 2) This vaccination also protects girls in the age range of 9 to 26 from 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and 50% of vulvar cancer cases.
