1. In the second week class, we discussed the steps to develop a training program. The chart is in the presentation from that week (see Appendix 1, below). Discuss each step to analyzing and organizational and trainee needs.

When developing a training program the first thing that must be established is that the training has to have a practical goal of addressing a need or a specific job function of the trainee. Training that does not accomplish this is not effective training.

The first thing to do is to analyze the organizational/trainee needs. Ask the trainees or the organization just exactly what their needs are. This can be accomplished in a multitude of ways to include asking them directly, having them complete surveys or a number of other ways. Ask yourself what they need. Do they need skilled workers, competent leaders or something else?

The next step is to analyze the training task. After you’ve figured out what the trainee needs (listening skills, conflict management training, etc.) a thorough examination of the specific task you want the trainee to perform is in order. A detailed step by step list of what the trainee should be able to do is necessary to make sure the training is going to produce the desired results. If you are in a time crunch, you need to be able to pick out the most critical steps from the list.

Next is to develop the training objectives. After figuring out the steps of skills you want to teach, specific objectives for the trainee to accomplish need to be developed. Specific behavior that is expected to be performed must be stated clearly.

Organizing the training content is the next step in the process. This is where you will draft the information the trainees need to know and describe the behaviors they will be expected to perform.
