RATIONALISATION

This essay will outline key features of rationalization, which are bureaucracy; rational work design and contemporary rationalization. The essay will also investigate why organizations might consider the concept of rationalization as well as applying these techniques to a specific area of work at junction hotel, underlining how they would be applied in practice and concluding on their probable impacts on the hotel and the workers.

One of the techniques that aims to increase efficiency and control in organizations is bureaucracy. To depict control in an organization, there has to be a bureaucratic hierarchy because it then creates a manageable span of control at each level of hierarchy. This then automatically leads to the organization becoming more efficient due to the different levels of professionalism. Another way of increasing efficiency and control is through bureaucratic paperwork which is typified by the pro-forma. According to (King and Lawley, 2013, p42) “it allows added control through surveillance and monitoring of employees”. This therefore goes to show that efficiency can also be increased through the use of a pro-forma because it standardizes the information to be stored and makes it easy to access, making the work load much more efficient. An example of a pro-forma is the UCAS form.

Another key feature that aims to increase efficiency and control in organizations is rational work design. This mainly focuses on reduction of costs, however it also increases efficiency and control through the use of labour force. This is done through work being broken down into simplistic, repetitive tasks that require little or no skill. The work is also designed to be achieved in the most cost efficient and time efficient manner.
