In 1973, the Supreme Court passed a law that allowed women to have the choice of abortion. Abortion is the removal of a developing baby within the mother’s womb by surgical procedures either by medical instruments or chemical ways. It has been estimated that before abortion became legal thousands upon thousands of women had illegal abortions and as a result many ended up dying. Even though opponents, identifying themselves as pro-life, assert that life begins at conception, and therefore abortion is the immoral killing of an innocent human being. Pregnant women will resort to unsafe illegal abortions if no legal option exists.

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the fetus. There are two different types of abortions, a medical abortion, which is gone about by taking medications. A surgical abortion the uterus is emptied by surgery ("National Abortion Federation: What Is Medical Abortion?"). Many believe it is immoral but in reality it is the better choice to keep abortion legal. According to the Guttmacher Institute in October 2013, Forty-one states do not allow abortions, except when necessary to protect the woman’s life or health ("An Overview of Abortion Laws"). Although abortion goes against many religions and beliefs, it may be the only option in some situations.

Abortion should be legal because some women may have medical problems that could damage their health and their baby’s health if they choose to carry on with their pregnancy. Every year, 78,000 women die from unsafe abortions ("10 Arguments in Favor of Pro-Choice Policy - Amplify"). If abortion was legal then women wouldn’t have to risk their life by getting unsafe abortions. “Abortion is a safe medical procedure.
