Parentocracy and not meritocracy

The admission to higher education in china is based on the College entrance examination(CEE). the CEE was introduce in the 1950’s and it follow a long history of chinese education system that is based on standardized national examination. There are different laws and regulations that help the minority and poor family. The higher education in china was free up til the 1980’s and the annual intuition fee for the public higher education institutions is very low comparing to other countries.

The admission to Higher Education in china is based on the result of the College Entrance Examination (CEE). The CEE was introduced in the 1950’s and it follows a long history of Chinese education systems that are standardized national examinations. The CEE today is a part of a merit-based admission system with the intension of ensuring equal opportunities for all applicants.

The criteria for admission vary from province to province. The applicants from the five minorities are enrolled with lower requirements. And the system also favours the applicant from namely Beijing and Shanghai, where applicants are admitted with lower scores to key universities in the cities.

The CEE was centralized and national until 2000 when major cities like Beijing and Shanghai were allowed to have their own CEE syllabuses to support the differences across regions.

The admission to a prestigious university is also formed in relation to the applicants “Hukou” (household registration) From the critical perspective the decentralization of the CEE
