Ethical Cultural Analysis

United Parcel Service (UPS) is a package delivery company which also provides supply chain services to its customers. Founded in 1907 by James Casey, the company began in a humble office underneath the sidewalk and is currently number 50 on the Fortune 500. UPS is not limited to picking up and delivering small packages, or “parcels” as they are referred to in jargon. The company has expanded to provide services for supply chain logistics services for its clients as well. UPS has multiple subsidiaries which in order provide the complete spectrum of services. These include The UPS Store, UPS Air Cargo, UPS Capital, UPS CONNECT, UPS Consulting, Customer Solutions, UPS Express Critical, UPS Freight, UPS Mail Innovations, and UPS Supply Chain Solutions. Each department prioritizes utilizing resources cross-departmentally in order to minimize costs to the customer.

The interest in this company stems from the fact that the writer of this paper began working at UPS Supply Chain Solutions in 2006 at the age of 22. Lack of ambition and life situations played critical roles in retarding advancement within the company. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in business, the plan is to begin the upward trek for advancement within the company. It could mean remaining in the Operations department with SCS, or transferring out of SCS altogether, UPS has many opportunities available for people who are willing to relocate and willing to work hard to earn what they want to achieve. According to UPS Fact Sheet (2014), in 2013 UPS employed 395,000 employees; 318,000 in the US, and 77,000 internationally. It is because of its large size that UPS is an ethically transformed company.
