Ethics Simulation
Abstract
This paper will discuss the decisions made during an ethics simulation training in which the writer holds a position as a Quality Control Manager. The situations will be outlined and a explanation will be giving for the best course of action regarding the situation. Societal pressures will be analyzed in relation to ethical decision making. Lastly, concepts from the simulation will be applied to a real world work environment.
The Scenario
In the ethics simulation, the writer holds the position of Quality Control Manager (QCM) at a supplement company. The first scenario has the QCM encounter a problem regarding contamination of its product. The chemical that is contaminating the product pose very little threat to its customers, however, in some small pockets of the population it can have adverse side effects. The QCM is faced with a number of different choices. The choice that will be made must include certain criteria. One of those criteria is staying in line with the companies ethical code, the second is to alleviate any negative issues that may affect stakeholders.
The first part of the process was to determine and analyze the problem. The problem in this situation was whether or not to warn the consumer and what information should be provided. The next step was to determine the stakeholders that would be most affected by the situation. The main stakeholders mostly effected were; the CEO, QCM, Director of Public Relations and the consumer. Given the stakeholders involved, the QCM had three major duties and those were to refund a defective product, ensure proper labeling of ingredients and make known potential dangers. These duties are important for two reasons; first is to ensure the customer gets a quality product that they can be confident in consuming and second to uphold the company's standards in regards to the service they provide their consumers.
