How to Change Your Vehicle Engine Oil

Regularly changing your vehicle’s engine oil and filter is one of the most important things you can do to keep your car running well. Over time, your oil breaks down and your filter becomes clogged with contaminants. Depending upon your driving habits and driving conditions, this may take as few as three months or 3,000 miles. Fortunately, changing your oil is fairly easy and is self-rewarding.

The first step and most important step in changing your oil is preparation. Having the right tool for the right job will make the difference between spending thirty minutes to spending three hours on changing your oil. To get the right tools, you can go to any automotive parts store like: Kargens, AutoZone, Pepboys, Winchester's Autozone, etc. When you go to any parts store, the procedure is always the same, you walk up to the parts counter and ask the sales associate for the specific oil filter for your vehicle. Next, you need to select the correct grade of engine oil and how many quarts of oil your vehicle needs. If you do not know what specific grade of oil your vehicle needs, consult your owner’s manual under maintenance. After you have looked up the specifications on the oil, make sure you have all the necessary tools to change the oil. You will need to purchase: an oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter, an oil drain pan to catch the oil and any cleaning material just in case you spill any on oil on the ground. After you have purchased everything from the parts store, park your vehicle on a flat surface and let engine cool down for at least an hour. After the engine has cooled down, place all your materials purchased at the store on a table and prepare yourself to perform your own oil change.
