Abstract

In my research paper I plan to inform you on the origins of sushi and how it became a favorite amongst the American population. I will be answering questions such as, where did sushi come from, how has it changed, and what were the reasons that sushi came to be what it is today? I would like to explore the differences in sushi across cultures such as the Japanese in Japan, Japanese Americans, and other non-Japanese Americans. Alongside the ins and outs of sushi I will also give an insight to the colonization and cultural aspects of the Japanese that came to the United States and their journey to America. I will also be covering what culture practices, like sushi, have been altered and how the Japanese Americans practice their culture in the United States today. While doing this, I will also cover major historical moments that the Japanese Americans had to face such as their internment after Pearl Harbor which affected their cultural practices in the United States. I found a lot of information in books, newspaper articles, journals, and a couple of websites. It is necessary to learn about different cultures that are in the United States. Getting a look into the Japanese culture can help to teach us about why and how sushi came to be. I feel as though this is an important topic because a lot of Americans enjoy sushi on a regular basis and most know that it is from Japan, but they are unaware of the differences in traditional sushi and modern sushi.
