Key Idea : Listening and Reading

Listening and reading for literary response involves comprehending, interpreting, and critiquing imaginative texts in every medium, drawing on personal experiences and knowledge to understand the text, and recognizing the social, historical and cultural features of the text ("New York State Standards ", n.d.)

Goals and Objectives

The students in this class are second graders who are reading Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish and illustrated by Fritz Siebel.

Performance Indicator: Read aloud accurately and fluently, using phonics and context cues to determine pronunciation and meaning ("New York State Standards ", n.d.)

1. Learning Objective – In a small group the students will use picture clues to predict the meaning of the context with 100% participation and the use of a reading checklist.

2. Learning Objective – In a small group the students will take turns reading a page in the book aloud. Measuring how fast the student reads and if they read with expression in their voice. 100% participation and the use of a reading checklist.

3. Learning Objective –Students will use letter-sound cues to recognize the words ending in “ed” within the story of Amelia Bedelia (Parish, 1963). 100% participation and averaging 10/20 words on a reading checklist.

Performance Indicator: Understand the literary elements of setting, character, plot, theme, and point of view and compare those features to other works and to their own lives ("New York State Standards ", n.d.).

1. Learning Objective – After reading the book Amelia Bedelia (Parish, 1963). The student will complete a worksheet about the literary elements in the story with 80% accuracy.

2. Learning Objective – Given drawing materials (i.e. Paper, crayons, or markers) the student will create their own Amelia Bedelia (Parish, 1963) character. The student...
