The Dinner Party

1: The Setting and how it influences a story

The setting (Location) is very important to a story because it can explain why certain events happen. For example in this story when the man placed the bowl of milk, the American knew there was a snake because of the setting. Setting (time period) can help influence what kind of characters are in the story. For example if the story took place in the distant future there may have been a robot or if it took place in the distant past there may have been a pilgrim. In this case the story took place when India was a British colony, explaining why there was a British Colonel, Army officers and their wives Both types of setting can affect the theme of a story because since setting often explains why events occur and a theme is built on a sequence of events setting is one of the pieces involved. Overall different is a very important influence on the plot line, events, characters and theme of a story.
