Why did Rome split into an Eastern and Western Empire?

The Roman Empire was becoming too large and vast to govern out of one capital city with one government. They were getting a lot of pressure from the barbaric tribes, and they needed more support in those areas so to focus on it they split

Western: Holy Roman Empire

Eastern: Roman Empire (later Byzantine Empire)

Where were their capital cities?

Eastern: Byzantium (and then Constantinople)

Western: Rome

Who is Constantine?

A Roman Emperor from 306 to 337, and the first christian emperor. Made Christianity the primary religion of the Holy Roman Empire

What did he do and why?

Separated civil and military authority, converted to christianity, created a new coin which would become the currency of the European Empire and Byzantine empire for over 1000 years. He also was the first Emperor to declare tolerance for Christians, and called the First council of Nicea which created the Nicene Creed. He also rebuilt a new residence in Byzantium and renamed it Constantinople after himself. This became the capital of the Eastern Empire for over 1000 years. This was done by the Edict of MIlan.

Who is Charlemagne?

King of the Franks and king of the Lombards. (Northern part of Europe)

Why is he important?

He united most of Western Europe during the Middle ages and created the foundations for modern Germany and France. He was the first Roman Emperor since the fall of the western Empire. Unites the church with the government (leads to corruption of the church. Does anything the Pope wants.)

What did each side of the Roman Empire follow in terms of Christianity?

Eastern: Nicene Christianity. Then overtaken by Muslim missionaries. Starts orthodox religions.
