ABSTRACT

The business world is changing at a rapid pace and change is one of the greatest challenges facing any workplace today (Fralix 2001). The cafeteria gallery has experienced tremendous change since it was constructed in the 1970’s till date, the change being effected in the gallery and most organisation is how to cope with a new and more challenging market by changing how business is conducted (Kotter 2007). The two models of change management have been used in this paper; the Lewin’s model which outlines the steps for the planned changes the organisation is about to embark on; and the McKinsey ‘Seven S’ model which looks at the past occurrences that brought about the incremental changes.

INTRODUCTION

According to oxford dictionary, Change is "the act or an instance of making or becoming different". It is not surprising, then that organisation such as the Gallery experienced tensions when new strategies were introduced, it is at such times that established principles and methods are most likely to be challenged and altered. Organisational change might occur as a reactive response to external environmental factors or in expectation of future trends generated proactively (Hamel 2003). The concept of organisations as systems operating in a multidimensional environment will give insight to understanding changes that have occurred (Senior and Fleming 2006).
