Reflection Paper
Art has many meanings in our society and it can be expressed in many forms. When you think of art, most would think of a painting or a drawing but there is so much more to the definition of art. This paper will describe what art mean to me and provide examples of how I believe art and culture relate to each other.
Art and Culture
The definition of art will be different based upon whom you ask. Ask 10 different people; you may get 10 different definitions. Merriam-Webster defines art as “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings” or “works created by artists: paintings, sculptures, etc., that are created to be beautiful or to express important ideas or feelings” or “the methods and skills used for painting, sculpting, drawing, etc.” (Merriam-Webster, 2014) I believe that art is something that expresses a person’s vision of what they have in their mind. What they have in their mind could have been placed there by a vision, an event, or a special skill.
Jony Ive is a well know designer for Apple with credits of bringing the world the iMac, iPhone, iPod, and soon the Apple Watch. Jony uses what he envisions and creates it right down to the last detail. This is his form of art. The form of art has had a major influence on technology, as we know it. It is now that style to have these products and to use that to their fullest extent. Some use these products to promote their form of artistic expressions. The relationships between Apple and the purchasers of their product have definitely made an impact on our culture.
Another example of artistic expression is Van’s Shoes. Vans have been in existence since 1966 (Van’s, 2014). The company has made it available for the customers to create their own design of shoes and be somewhat of an artist themselves. Additionally, Vans created a promotion to give back to the schools....
