Question: Philanthropy is a very important part of not-for-profit success and bringing about positive social change. In this post, provide a detailed exploration of philanthropy (theoretically and practically). Explain how it relates to the Concentric Circle model and brainstorm ways organizations can legally raise funds to support their missions and operations. Be sure to support your post with other credible references under the APA guidelines.

Answer: According to Merriam-Webster philanthropy is defined as an organization distributing or supported by funds set aside for humanitarian purposes. An example of this is: ”For many years, Microsoft has used corporate philanthropy to bring technology to people who can't get it otherwise, donating more than $3 billion in cash and software to try to bridge the digital divide.” —Bill Gates, Time, 11 Aug. 2008

The concentric zone model, also known as the Burgess model, is a theoretical model used to explain urban social structures. In regards to philanthropy it can be used as a method of establishing a support base for non-profit organizations. To begin using this model you will ask the members of your organization to come up with a list of constituencies that would most likely be willing to support the organization if approached. Participants should list categories of individuals and then specific individuals. Then you will draw one large circle with two circles inside of it, all beginning from the same point. The first circle contains the individuals with the greatest stake or interest in the success of your undertaking. These individuals are directly benefiting from your organizations activities. The second circle includes constituents already known, such as personal friends who will support. The last circle will contain your prospective contributors.
