Should People Work on Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Day is a day when one celebrates the blessings that were given to them through the idea of “harvest” and food. The traditions rooted from when the pilgrims and puritans, as well as others, gathered to give thanks. It was a stress free day when all worries were left aside and families as well as friends would join at a table and enjoy to company of each other. Of course, times are different and there are necessities, responsibilities and wants of one, but that should not include having to work on Thanksgiving Day. One can understand the purpose of a supermarket or deli of some sort to be opened but clothing stores most definitely should not remain open on this day of thanks. One must be provided with the chance to take the one day out of every year to be worry free and spend time with ones family and that is why I believe one ought to be given the chance to do so.

Therefore, as for the delis and supermarkets, I personally believe they should be open from about 8 in the morning until about 1 in the afternoon. Keeping in mind people have forgotten some groceries for the ingredients needed in order to cook. The hours are early in the day and by the time one gets out of work this person has enough time to get home and still be able to eat with and spend the rest of the day with their family. Black Friday, the “holiday” that directly follows Thanksgiving, is a day that a deli worker, for example, does not have to stress about. These workers, in the case that they were released from work at 1pm, do not have to cut their Thanksgiving Day short due to the black Friday sales events that occur at all clothing and merchandise stores.

Workers that are employed at retail stores should not be expected to arrive to work in the middle of their Thanksgiving dinner to alleviate the needs of others. Black Friday is supposed to be...
