Social Media Can Be Deadly, Leonard Pitts Analytical Essay

Using sentence structure and repetition in “Social Media Can Be Deadly”, Leonard Pitts transitions from narration to analysis as he criticises how social media alienates us.

Leonard Pitts starts off by narrating the story of the murder of Justin Valdez and goes into details of the scene and describes how social media is invloved with this scenerio. He then transfers onto criticizing social media on how it is alienating us from the world. In the fisrt paragraph he emphaziese how "funny it might be, expect that somebody died" and then onto the next short statement "That part isn't funny at all." by sentence structure he shows his sarcasm. The last sentence is short to state that the situation really is not funny at all which goes against the phrase “how funny it might be”. The author uses a long list of details to show what happened. His purpose is to create an image and to add suspense and drama to the article to make it more interesting. But the structure of this sentence is purposely long to indicate that the proccess of the murderer not being seen with his .45 caliber pistol was indeed long. This is important because this is a well given example to show that people do not pay attention around them when they are on their social medias. He also uses loaded words, like “engrossed” for example to show how ardent he actually feels about the social media being able to kill a young man.

In the following paragraphs it is explained how quick the shot was. "That got people's attention", the sentence is structured short and quick just like the shot, also it gives a bit of an auditory image and sound to the shot as it went "BANG".
