Executive Summary

Established in the 1940’s as Burney’s BBQ, Drexler’s Bar-B-Que has gone through several changes in ownership, location and name. Since 2003, Drexler’s has been located in the Third Ward of Houston. While remaining a family owned and operated business, Drexler’s has undergone several ownership changes. It has been owned by current owners, James Drexler and his mother, Eunice Scott, since 1982. The current staff includes James, Eunice, James’ sister, Virginia, and two or three other full-time employees. Each family member specializes in a specific area of the business’s operations, with Mrs. Scott having the greatest influence on the overall culture of the organization.

Values

With Mrs. Scott’s influence, Drexler’s Bar-B-Que is an organization based on honesty, hard work, faith in God, and the standard of treating people fairly and with respect. Mrs. Scott is in the restaurant every day it is open and holds all with work in the restaurant to the high standards she sets for herself. Mrs. Scott sets the example for excellence in customer service, moving through the restaurant inquiring about individual needs.

These strong values are not limited to business operating hours, employees and customers. Drexler’s gives back to the surrounding community by sponsoring local sports teams, a local Boy Scout troop, and assisting local youths to visit an amusement park and go camping.

Organization Effectiveness

The systems theory of organizational effectiveness states that “1) effectiveness criteria must reflect the entire input-process-output cycle, not simply output, and 2) effectiveness criteria must reflect the interrelationships between the organization and it’s outside environment.” (Ivancevich, et al. 2014. p 11) Using this criteria, it can be determined that Drexler’s is an effective...
