Abstract
United Parcel Service’s is a global company driven by its information technology system. In 1907, they began as a local delivery company that expanded along the west coast and eventually reaching New York in 1930. They went international in 1970. Today they have 70,000 drivers who connect through information technology to deliver over 14 million packages daily to over 200 countries and territories.
UPS Global Operations
Information technology has transformed the package delivery business by enabling UPS to expand their business and reach out to more countries and territories. UPS realized that technology was growing and they wanted to take advantage of the growing technology by investing in information systems. In doing so they revolutionized the packaging industry when they developed and deployed the first Delivery Information Acquisition Device known as the DIAD. The DIAD allowed driver to communicate instantly with their data centers. Drivers can simply scan the barcode, obtain a signature from the customer and upload the information with the push of one button. It has a GPS system that gives drivers more detailed directions to customer pickup and drop off points for improved customer service. The new color screen allows for color coding alerting a driver about an emergency pick up. The DIAD also allows for communication between the driver and the dispatch center. This technology also helps customers to be able to track their packages online. Each time the package is scanned the customer can see where the package is and about when it will arrive at its destination. Information technology has allowed for UPS to become more efficient and meet the needs of the customer.
