Leukemia

Genetic risk factors are those that are part of our DNA, they are most inherited from parents. Some genetic factors may increase the risk of childhood leukemia, but most cases of leukemia are not linked to any known genetic causes. Along with an increased risk of getting serious infections, having a reduced immune defense may increase the risk of leukemia.

Environmental risk factors in our surroundings such as radiation and certain chemicals can increase the risk of the child getting leukemia, yet studies have not found a direct link.

Leukemia has no known direct risk factors, so there is no positive way to prevent leukemia.

It is important for parents and family to know that in most cases there is nothing these children or parents could have done to prevent this cancer.

Physical symptoms of leukemia include pale skin, easy bleeding and bruising, and swelling of the belly due to leukemia cells collecting in the spleen and liver.

The child may have a loss of appetite and weight loss or even bone or joint pain.

If the child shows any signs or symptoms concerning leukemia, a physician should be notified. Exams and test, such as blood tests will determine the cause of the symptoms.

Treatment decisions vary, Research what is best for the child and your family. Needs can be met best by cancer centers for children specifically. The main treatment for childhood leukemia is chemotherapy, radiation therapy may be another option. Side effects of treatment may include hair loss, moutth sores, fatigue, nausea, and even an increase of risks to infections due to low white blood cell counts.

The cancer can take a toll on a child so as a parent it is important to have support and understand what may come.
