Carpe diem is a phrase that means “Seize the day.” All Carpe Diem poems use the same theme. Even though Carpe Diem is an old poem, it is still relevant in today times. For example, “To the Virgin to Make Much of Time” is a Carpe Diem poem, which has similarities to the song “we are Young” by FUN. They both use imagery, tone, and have similar takes on “seize the day.

In “To the Virgins to Make Much of Time, by Robert Herrick uses a lot of imagery. For example, he says “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, old time is still a-flying.” He is comparing a flower cycle to human life and the importance of seizing opportunities while you can, which is related to the theme seize the day. In the song” We are Young,” the band is saying to live life to the fullest. A verse of the lyrics says” Tonight we are young so let’s set the world on fire, we can burn brighter than the sun.” This verse is related to the theme because it is saying have fun while you’re a young.

The song “We are Young” and the poem” To the Virgins to Make Much of Time” both have the same tone. The tone is playful and optimistic. The poem is saying to live while you are young and experience things. An example of this would be when Herrick says” Then be not coy, but use your time.” In the song, “We are young”, the band is saying to party and have fun before the day is over with.

Even though the song and the poem uses imagery, the song uses more descriptive imagery to describe his point. He says” I can hear the Choir”, “let’s set the world on fire”, and “burn brighter than the sun.” Theses lyrics shows vivid images in your head. Although the poem doesn’t use as much imagery as the song, it still has some. For example, Herrick says, “The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun.” This is showing an image of how the sun lights up heaven.
