Network Design Paper for UMUC Adelphi Building

Presented and Prepared by:

The migration and upgrade path for the network infrastructure in the Adelphi building of UMUC is required to be designed with future growth in mind. In this upgrade the mindset will be taken that upgrades will be needed to increase performance of all devices on the network, including user workstations. The best way to accomplish this goal is to follow the best practice schema for IP addressing and to configure subnets in a way that would allow for easy management and upkeep from the IT staff. The individual subnets have been configured in such a way as to allow for easy navigation in the network for each segment that is required. Much in the same design as my own company the third octet of the subnets have be designed to designate between the student and staff networks. Hosts that have an IP address that have the third octet start with 2 are designated for the staff network. If the third octet begins with the number 1 than the hosts will be on the student side of the network topology.

This design is organized even further by utilizing the second number in the third octet. This will determine the physical location of the host by the number in that field. For these purposes if the second number in the third octet is a 1 it will be located on the first floor, a number 2 will indicate the second floor, and a number 3 will indicate a Wi-Fi potentially mobile user. The third slot in the third octet number has also been assigned to determine what the systems function will be. A number 1 in this position indicates that the machine is in one of the student labs, the number 2 indicates that the machine is located in a staff lab, a number 3 indicates that the host machine is assigned to operational staff, and a number 4 indicates that the host machine is one of the admissions staff members.

Now that we have covered the student and staff hosts and their corresponding subnets, the next step is to...
