Research Purpose

As a college student who is expecting to graduate in several weeks, I have felt great pressure and tension with relation to job related issues. Apparently, most of my friends around me are having similar worries as I am. Unlike the past, I find conversation subjects being job related more often. One of the findings which shocked me during the conversation with my friend back in Korea, was how many days and hours typical white collar workers have to work in Korea these days. As I plan to carry my life out in my hometown eventually, being aware of the current trend of employment and compensation in the country is important as it will have significant impact on my career plans beyond graduation. Therefore, I decided to do my research on overtime and its related issues in Korea for this research assignment.

Literature Review

The literature for this assignment was very limited as it was tough to find sources via the library. Most of my sources were from the Internet such as news articles and publications from governmental agencies. As I was searching for information on the Internet, I realized that there are many professional databases and electronically published literature which allowed me to access a substantial amount of credible sources. The first main literature is “The Economics of Overtime Working” by Robert A. Hart. This book illustrates a comprehensive economic evaluation of overtime work. It approaches to the subject of overtime from different perspectives with solid evidence found internationally. The ministry of Employment and Labour of Korea was another excellent source for my research. It provided me with various employment policies and regulations that are currently enforced and had articles and links that I found very helpful.
