Assignment Task for Unit : Developing Critical Thinking

Section 1 : Be able to critically assess own beliefs, attitudes and value systems

AC 1.1

Explain the difference between beliefs, attitudes and values

Critical thinking is the ability to breakdown a task and analyse it. By analysing an individual`s position, arguments and conclusions and evaluating the evidence from everyone`s point of view, being able to read between the lines, looking beneath the surface and identifying false or unfair assumptions and drawing conclusions about whether arguments are valid and justifiable are all part of the process.

To be able to look at the overall picture I believe our beliefs, attitudes and values plays a huge part in the way we look at situations and the way we deal with situations. Also, others beliefs, attitudes and values are important.

Beliefs are more a philosophy, something we feel rather than a fact. Beliefs may or may not be true but we believe in them. Attitudes are a behaviour, negative or positive and are primarily developed through our life experiences. People and situations affect our attitudes and they are open to change. Values provide the foundation of how we live our lives. They control our beliefs and behaviours. They are how we make judgements about what is right or wrong, what is good or bad.

I am the eldest of three children. My father was in the army when I was born so we followed his placements until I was three then we settled in Barry. My father took whatever job he could to provide for us and as such was never out of work. He gave me one of my strongest values I hold which is hard work. I believe that you will only get from life what you put into life and this plays a huge part in my personal and my work life. My attitude towards work is to give 110%, always to strive to excel and to learn.

Another value gained through a safe, happy and consistent family life is trust and as such I am always optimistic....
