BACKGROUND, CAUSE

700 000 illegal immigrants/ year, many kids

around 11.5 million in total’

With immigration comes a lot of talk about its impact on the economy, but im going to focus on human and civil rights

1996

North Carolina— allows local law enforcement officers to act as federal immigration officials. they can arrest and begin the deportation process for anyone that is in the country illegally (since a legislation made in 1996, meant to increase safety, terrorists, but today that’s not the main concern). People can get arrested and deported because of a minor traffic violation

* increase of racial profiling

* officers use their powers to blatantly discriminate along racial lines

In 2010 the state of Arizona enacted a law in order to attempt a reduction of illegal immigrants within the state. The law was called the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, also known as SB 1070 which required immigrants to always carry their paperwork in order to prove their identity and legality. It also gave police enforcement the authorization to stop, search and arrest people who were suspicious of being illegal immigrants, resulting in deportation of 338.000 illegal immigrants

Plenty of human rights violations are being cited in this deportation process

* Long-time lawful residents have been indefinitely detained for months and even years before being let go.

Also been cases where Asylum seekers (who would otherwise have a good case) have been denied the knowledge of the judicial process and provided no guidance or legal counsel

Even though they consider themselves as Americans and was brought here because of their parents, which is no fault of their own, they don’t have the right to get the basic necessity of a driver´s license, or a legitimate job and have to live with the fear that they might get deported at any time, having to leave the...
