The argument over what a proper relationship between science and religion should entail has been debated over ever since people first started exploring the world around them. From astronomers such as Galileo who was killed for believing that the sun was the center of the universe to scientists such as Charles Darwin who was shunned by the Church and many Christians for believing that species formed from evolution, the coexistence of religion and science has always been a struggle. There may not be a correct answer as to what the “proper” relationship between science and religion should be. This is mostly due to the fact that it is based entirely on the individual and each person has a different view on this. I believe that, although we must have faith in what the Bible says, it is not meant to be taken literally and many of the stories are up for individual interpretation.

In my opinion, science should be respectful of religious beliefs and other cultures. This means that when they investigate and experiment on subjects that certain religions have claimed to know the truth about, scientists should withhold any conclusions until they are entirely certain. They should also reveal them in a way that acknowledges previous beliefs, takes them into consideration, and respectfully explains how that was false and how they reached their new conclusion. On the other hand, religion must respect both the scientific method and those scientists who have worked tirelessly to discover their work. Many scientists who discovered things that conflicted with the Bible were in fact Christians, and they made the painstaking decision to put the truth before their faith. Christians must realize that even though the findings are not in accordance with the Bible, it does not mean that God does not exist or that he has been proven wrong.
