Answer to question 1:

I was subject to a lot of temptation at a young age and saw many people I was close to fall into temptation and come out the other side a very different person. Many of my cousins turned to violence and drugs, as did many of my closest friends. Me on the other hand understood that these people were heading down a dead end street and I did not want to follow them. I am not a perfect person, in fact, I have many faults, but I have always been my own person. My father made me promise him when I was young to never experiment with drugs or violence because he himself is a true leader and mentor for many people and he understands the value of faith and character. To this day, I hold that promise, for the most part! Further, I see myself as a mentor for my little brother, who has a mind of his own and sometimes needs a point in the right direction. A situation arose a couple weeks ago when he called me from jail and needed to be picked up. Without hesitation I left class, went, and picked him up. I was not mad at him because I did not know what happened and at that point, I was glad he was ok. He explained that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time with some friends and they were involved in a fight with two other people. The result was a black eye here and a busted lip there, harmless in all reality. As an older brother and someone who has been there and seen these situations, I know that a harmless fistfight can lead to a bruised reputation and busted character image. Further, I explained to him that instead of getting in fights on Wednesday nights he needs to be studying or at the gym taking all that violence out on a punching bag or helping out mom and dad and learn to be productive. In doing so, he will learn to build a strong character and confidence that will lead to a positive reputation in the real world.
