Social Responsibility is an organization's obligation to maximize its positive impact on stakeholders and to minimize its adverse effects. (Ethical Decision-Making And Cases, page 28) Gone are the days of companies being singularly focused on their bottom line. Stockholders are not the only peoples needs that a company is obligated to serve. Business also has to serve the community as a whole. A company has to show its investment in the community that it operates in. Communities see a businesses regard and concern for its well being as proof that they are not just a dollar sign but valuable assets.

In my evaluation of Q Grocery, its attitude toward social responsibility is almost nonexistent. Q Grocery attitude has been very aloof and distant. They have put little or no effort to improving community relations. They have not made a real effort in addressing the needs of more health conscious society. While they have offered a few health conscious food choices, these healthier food options are so limited that it has made no impact. The healthy items offered cannot possibly address the need for a variety of health conscious items so customers can choose which brands they like the best. Q has closed 2 “underperforming” stores in high-crime areas that had been losing business for years before they were closed. During my evaluations of the closed stores, I saw that no real effort has been made to ascertain why the stores were not profitable other than the high crime rate at the time.. Crime statistics for the areas surrounding the stores validated the high crime rates at the time the stores closed.
