Group Presentation Outline

General Purpose: Our general purpose is to persuade.

Specific Purpose: Our specific purpose is to persuade our audience to support the purchase of bike racks with additional safety features at Purdue University.

Introduction:

Attention Getter: As shown by the video, bike thefts can occur quickly and easily, and there’s a small likelihood that someone will attempt to stop them. Throughout Purdue’s campus, we’ve all seen bikes up in trees, on top of fountains, or even those with missing parts. However, there’s an efficient way for this general issue to be resolved. Credibility Statement: After conducting extensive research concerning bike thefts, we came across a solution which would lessen the number of bike thefts in future years.

Relevance Statement: An average of over 100 bikes are stolen from Purdue University’s campus each year. (“Purdue Police now requiring bicycle registration”, 2014)

Thesis Statement: Bike theft is a major problem on campus that can be solved by the purchase of bike racks with additional safety features and the $2500 budget will allow numerous racks to be placed in strategic locations, therefore preventing bike thefts and giving students with bikes a better sense of security.

Body:

Transition: First, Regan will discuss the problem of bike thefts and why it needs to be resolved.

Main Point 1: Bike theft is a common issue amongst Purdue students that lacks an effective solution.

Between numbers collected from a survey of the Purdue student body and a report from the Purdue University Police Department, it has been made apparent that bike theft on campus is an issue that needs to be dealt with.

Twenty-two of 44 students at Purdue University who responded to an online survey that our group conducted stated that they know at least one person who has had his or her bike stolen, revealing that bike theft is a predominant problem here on campus.
